needoflight asked: Will you help me understand Downton Abbey? I'm on season 1 episode 1 and I'm just confused. Is this a biographical show? I'm not sure which British royalty it would be portraying. I love it so far just a bit confused about the story-line. Just a rich, royal family with servants? Just wanted to know if there was any truth or historical significance in who the family is. It’s about a family (but not a real family) in England. Basically, it’s an upstairs/downstairs scenario. It has a lot of truth with the facts of the period, being the early 19th century, but no, it’s not supposed to be a biographical show about a certain family. The father, Lord Grantham (who’s British), married his wife, Cora (who’s American), for her money. They have 3 daughters and they’re trying to marry off the oldest daughter, Mary. It’s a problem that they have 3 girls because there is no natural heir to the fortune and Downton Abbey. I hope this helps!
